Foster FAQ

Q: If I am approved to foster, how long will I have my foster pet(s)?
A: Depending on available transports and the health of your animal, you will have your foster pet from until we find them their fur-ever home.

Q: How will I identify my foster pet to the vet and to Dori's Darlings?
A: The foster coordinators will assign each of your foster animals a name. Before bringing your foster pet(s) to the Vets be sure to get your animals name. There are participating Dori Darlings vets for consistency of care and invoice reporting that we would like you to use. We will assign you a vet to use that is in your general area. Contact 832-969-8881 or doris.darlings@gmail.com  for that information.

Q: Should I bring my foster animals to the Veterinarian?
A: WE PREFER YOU CONTACT DORI FIRST. She may be able to help resolve a common issue without stressing kitty out at the vet. If she feels a vet is needed she will refer you to a trusted vet, we’ve worked with, in your area

Dori's Darlings has accounts at several local vets that are listed below that we would prefer you to use. Check back for updates on area veterinarians available to you. If you need to use a Vet other than the Vets listed here, you will have to pay yourself then Dori's Darlings will reimburse you ONLY up to the amount Dori would have paid for the care. We are a non-profit rescue and our funds are tight We want to provide quality care to all darlings but must be careful with the funds we have. Please explain that this is a foster pet and ask for “rescue friendly prices.”

Always contact Dori for advice before taking your foster to the vet so we can be kept informed of his/her needs and treatment.
Be sure to give the Veterinarian the Dori's Darlings name for each of your animals. Also, please have the Vet print out separate invoices stating all services for each of your foster pets. On the invoice, the client information will be DD's, but your name and info should be listed as the contact person for that invoice or animal, as well as the Dori's Darlings name.

Please notify your attending Vet that a Health Certificate will be required with name, address TBA at some point in the future in the case that the pet is not adopted locally. Any transport out of state requires a Texas Health Certificate with the name and address of the person who is on the receiving end. DD's also requires a full medical ‘passport’ for each pet that can be in the form of copies of invoices with what has been medically provided to the animal. All medical records for each animal follow the animal until it reaches its permanent loving home

“Should I keep my own pet(s) separate from my foster cat(s)?”
Yes. This is very important. Since we do not know the current health status of most of the cats, we recommend that you keep your foster cat(s) separate from your own pets for 10 days. This will ensure that things like kennel cough or intestinal illnesses are not spread.

You should also use separate litter boxes. Be sure to keep your foster cat feces clean up in the box to make sure if they have any illnesses that they will not be spread that way. All personal pets must be up to date on shots before a foster enters your home. Always let the attending vet know that you have other pets in your home, that way you can be advised by the vet if he/she feels that a booster is recommended for your own pets.

“Should I keep my own cat(s) separate from my foster cat(s)?”
Yes. This is very important. Since we do not know the current health status of the cat(s), we recommend that you keep your foster cat(s) separate from your own pets for 10 days. This will ensure that illnesses such as upper respiratory infections (URIs) and others if they have them will not be spread to your own pets. All personal pets must be up to date on shots before a foster enters your home.

“Will DD's provide me with food for my foster animal(s)?”
We will provide you with your first bag to get you started. After that you will be responsible for food, litter, toys, etc. and we will cover all veterinary care. We do require all cats to have the same diet as to not upset their digestive system going back and forth from Petco to foster care.  We feed BG (before grain) by Merrick.  You can purchase BG from local Petco, Natural Paws, or order online.

“How are the fosters adopted?”
We hold a minimum of two (2) adoption events each month. You must be committed to bringing your foster to at least one (1) event each month. You must also be willing to leave them at one of our Petco Partner locations for a one-week rotation once a month for exposure. They are featured on our website, facebook page, and petfinder.org, but it is our experience that they are most likely to be adopted when a potential home sees them in purrson. This is why your commitment to bringing them to Petco is crucial to the success of our program!

“What if I fall in love and can’t give up my foster(s)?”
Of course you’re going to fall in love! This happens. If you absolutely cannot let go, we simply ask that you pay the $125 adoption fee to cover vet costs. BUT before you decide please understand that most of our darlings are charmers! It is so easy to fall in love! Which means they are highly adoptable and should have a chance at a home of their own. Keeping them yourself takes a space away from another foster that could benefit from your time and generosity.

Thank you for all you are doing to help the animals!
